How to Link a PAN Card to an Aadhaar Card?
In accordance with current legislation, it is required that you link your PAN to your Aadhaar identification number. Furthermore, it is required to reference your Aadhaar number while filing your income tax return (ITR), when asking for a new PAN, and when availing monetary government benefits, including pensions, scholarships, LPG subsidies, and so on.
The government has declared that the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar will be extended by three months, from June 30, 2021, to September 30, 2021, effective immediately. Unless you link your PAN to your Aadhaar, your PAN will become inactive on October 1, 2021, if this is not done. Using your PAN will prevent you from doing financial activities when stating your PAN is required, such as when opening a bank account or applying for credit card approval.
Listed below is the procedure for linking your PAN to your Aadhaar card.
You can connect your PAN to Aadhaar by following the steps below:
a) Go to https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ to access the Income Tax e-filing website.
b) Become a member of that too (if you haven’t already done so). Your user ID will be your PAN (Permanent Account Number).
c) Enter your User ID, password, and birth date to log in.
d) A pop-up window will appear asking you to link your PAN to Aadhaar. Otherwise, navigate to “Profile Settings” on the menu bar and choose “Link Aadhaar”.
e) In accordance with the PAN specifications, personal information such as name, date of birth, and nationality will already be included.
f) Verify that the PAN details displayed on the screen correspond to those on your Aadhaar. Please keep in mind that when there is a discrepancy, you must rectify it in both documents.
g) If your Aadhaar number matches, input it and click the “connect now” option.
h) A pop-up notification will confirm that your Aadhaar and PAN have been successfully linked.
You may also link your PAN and Aadhaar by visiting https://www.utiitsl.com/or https://www.egov-nsdl.co.in/.
Registered on the e-filing Website for Income Taxes
If you are currently filing tax returns, the odds are that your PAN has already been linked to Aadhaar if you specified it earlier when filing ITR for previous assessment years. It is carried out by the tax department if both parties’ information is already on file with it.
You can verify whether your Aadhaar number has been connected to your PAN by accessing the income tax e-filing webpage at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
Enter your PAN (User ID) and passwords to access the website. Once signed in and your account has opened, click the icon next to your name to access “Profile Settings”. In the profile, your Aadhaar number will be partially connected.
For users who are not registered
If you do not wish to create an account on the e-filing site, there is also another method for linking your PAN or Aadhaar. A link to the new tax portal has been added to the homepage: www.incometax.gov.in.
Simply click on “Aadhaar Linking” on the e-filing page. A new form will open in which you must provide your PAN, Aadhaar number, Aadhaar-verified name, and mobile number.
If your Aadhaar card contains only your year of birth, you must also select the option “My Aadhaar card contains only my year of birth”. Additionally, you must agree to verify my Aadhaar details. Select “Connect to Aadhaar”.
Once correctly submitted, a notice will appear on your screen indicating that your PAN has been successfully connected to Aadhaar.
Additional techniques
a) All PAN providers communicate with one another via SMS
If you are unable to connect your PAN or Aadhaar using the department’s e-filing website, there are alternative methods for doing so.
In addition to the techniques described above, the Income Tax department (CBDT) has announced other methods for linking PAN and Aadhaar in its announcement dated June 29, 2017. By just by sending a simple SMS, you can connect your PAN and Aadhaar. You may send an SMS to either the NSDL e-Governance Infra Limited or the UTI Infra Technology Service Limited PAN service providers (UTIITSL).
You can just send SMS in a specified format either to 567678 or 56161 using a keyword.
UIDAI > Aadhar > 12-digit PAN > 10-digit PAN >
For instance, if the Aadhaar number is 111122223333 and your Permanent Account Number is AAAPA 9999, Then, you must send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 with the text UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA 9999.
Neither NSDL or UTI will charge anyone for this. On the other hand, SMS costs imposed by the mobile operator will apply.
b) Using a form to connect manually (Annexure-I)
According to the aforementioned notification, the CBDT has also included a manual way to assist taxpayers who are unable to resolve the issue of mismatch between PAN and Aadhaar data using other means.
You can visit a PAN service provider, NSDL, or UTIITSL service centre. You will be required to complete the form ‘Annexure-I’ and submit it together with the relevant supporting papers, which include a copy of your PAN card or Aadhaar card.
In contrast to internet offerings, this product is not free. Individuals are compelled to pay them a predetermined amount. The price is determined by whether or not corrections are made to the PAN and Aadhaar details throughout the connection process.
A fee of Rs 110 is paid for any adjustments to the PAN data. On either hand, the prescribed charge for updating Aadhaar information is Rs 50.
Biometric authentication is required in the event of a significant discrepancy between PAN and Aadhaar data.
Points:-
- When utilising online techniques, an Aadhaar OTP would be created if the name does not equal the one on your PAN card but your birth date and gender do. The OTP will be delivered to the registered/linked cell phone number associated with the Aadhaar number supplied online. To proceed or complete the linking process, you will need to input the OTP online.
- It is recommended that you resolve any discrepancies between your PAN and Aadhaar data by trying to link both the two numbers.
